PMI-Dominion Power – Ash Recycling Plant
Location: Chesapeake, Virginia
Description: Crowder Construction Company installed a new Ash Recycling Plant for PMI at Dominion Energy’s electric generating facility in Chesapeake, Virginia. The new process transports ash from two of the four existing boilers to a new fluidized combustor. The combustor burns the ash at high temperatures, removes the carbon and produces a marketable grade fly ash for use in Portland cement. The carbon burnout technology is environmentally friendly; by recycling the ash, the need for disposal in landfill areas is reduced. Crowder’s scope of work included installation of all equipment, ash-transporting ductwork, ash silos and other associated work.

The scope of work for this project included the installation of four 4000 KVA 4160V-480V transformers and associated switchgear; precipitator power distribution and controls equipment (AVC, TRCC, TR, rapper, ash hopper systems); installation of the fly ash pneumatic conveying system power and control systems; lighting and receptacles; equipment grounding; and pulling, termination, and testing of feeders and control wiring for the scope listed above. Work that was added to the scope of this project included identification and demolition of existing plant precipitator power and control systems, installation of small equipment foundations, installation of a tower crane foundation, site safety support, and installation and removal of temporary sight lighting.
Duke Energy – Waste Water Treatment Facility
Location: Belews Creek, North Carolina
Description: Construction of a new waste water treatment facility to support the flue gas desulfurization project. This project included all design and construction; site preparation; roadways; storm drainage system; the formation, placement, and finishing of concrete foundations for process tanks and buildings, a concrete bio-reactor unit and a concrete filtrate sump; the erection of two pre-engineered buildings, one structural steel filter press building, two clarifiers, miscellaneous steel and fiberglass tanks, pipe racks, steel and fiberglass walkways, stairs, and platforms; the installation of all associated electrical and instrumentation work and process piping, which included 12,000 feet of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe, ranging from 2 inches to 28 inches in diameter.
Baconton Power Plant – LM 6000 Gas Turbines
Location: Baconton, Georgia
Description: Installation of six LM 6000 gas turbines, including all support facilities. The mechanical piping ranged from small bore through 18 inch diameter stainless and carbon steel, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC). The work included all skid-mounted processes for fuel gas filter separator skid, water wash skid, carbon dioxide fire protection skid, water treatment, cooling tower, chiller and fire loop. Electrical work included power wiring through transformers and balance of plant, electrical and instrumentation of MCC rooms, GE Mark V control panels and switches.
Dominion Energy – Gas Turbine Generators
Location: Cedon, Virginia
Description: Turnkey installation at the Ladysmith Combustion Turbine Station of two GE Frame 7FA gas turbine generators with appurtenances. Dominion Energy provided the gas turbines and associated equipment and Crowder erected and commissioned the units. Additionally, Crowder provided the engineering, procurement and construction of the balance of the plant. The GE 7FA units are rated at generating a base load of 170 MW each and were installed with inlet air fogging systems to boost generation during the high temperature summer months and help Dominion meet the community’s peak generating demands. Crowder also designed and built a dual fuel system to allow the use of fuel oil as well as natural gas to run the units.

While Crowder performed the underground, civil, mechanical, piping, equipment erection, controls, electrical and instrumentation, Crowder’s in-house fabrication facility fabricated pipe spools, platforms and miscellaneous metal materials proficiently to expedite the construction progress.
Duke Energy – Ash Handling EPC Project
Location: Terrell, NC
Description: This was a design/build project for an ash handling system upgrade. The system included “slip form construction” of two 50 feet diameter by 95 feet tall concrete ash storage silos, the installation of over 1500 linear feet of piping, blowers, and associated equipment for the pneumatic conveyance of fly ash. Electrical installation included nine 5kv 250 hp motors with feeders and terminations, a 5kv primary 1000 KVA oiled filled transformer and two 5kv primary 300 KVA dry type transformers, custom 5kv switchgear to match existing units and a 480 volt motor control center. A new 2500 I/O point DCS Ovation System was installed to control the entire system while an existing Reliance System was incorporated to interface with the new system.
