CATS 485 Parking Deck
Location: Charlotte, NC

Crowder Construction Company was awarded a contract with the City of Charlotte for the Charlotte Area Transit System's (CATS) light rail parking deck at the south corridor station - the largest park-and-ride depot in southern Charlotte. Two sides of the four-story deck are completely below grade and the opposing sides are open. In order to meet site demands and reduce hauling and backfill volume, Crowder designed and built a 31,000 square foot soil nail wall on one corner of the project. This wall consisted of two legs - 100 feet and 490 feet - with heights reaching 46 feet. The unique structure has a grass roof used by the nearby elementary school as a playfield.

Raleigh Convention Center
Location: Raleigh, NC

Crowder was awarded a contract with the Skanska-Barnhill joint venture to complete the structural concrete package for the Raleigh Convention Center. The project included footings, grade beams, slab on grade, columns, beams, pan joists, suspended slabs, and slabs on metal deck totaling over 25,000 yards of concrete, 900 tons of steel, and 11,000 tons of stone all placed by Crowder. Some of the most challenging aspects of the job included logistical concerns such as very limited lay-down areas, lack of parking, and continuing construction despite the traffic of a busy road that split the project.

Norfolk Southern Emergency Trestle Repair
Location: Sanford, NC
Crowder was contacted by Norfolk Southern Railway to assist them in the emergency repair of a trestle bridge built in the 1970s and functioning at only 60% of design strength. Crowder mobilized immediately and began the required repair. This work was done in two phases with two crews working around the clock. Phase I required Crowder to mobilize to the site, remove the damaged sections of four piles from each bent that required repair and install new sections of pile. Phase II required Crowder to install concrete collars around the splice repairs made in Phase I. The entire duration of this project, from mobilization to reopening of the track, was only 4 days!

NCDOT Design-Build
Location: Haywood County, NC
Crowder was selected for a design-build project to replace two bridges for the NCDOT in Haywood County, NC. The two bridges were damaged beyond repair by Hurricane Frances in 2004. The project consisted of the removal and replacement of bridges over the east and west forks of the Pigeon River, which are trout streams and considered to be environmentally sensitive areas. Keeping in mind speed of construction as well as the environmental sensitivity, longer spans were used to reduce the number of in-water bents on both bridges. Turbidity curtains, oversized drilled shaft casings, double rows of wire-backed silt fence, saw cut demolition and continuous vacuum operations were also used to provide the least amount of environmental contamination as possible.

Chattooga River Bridge Replacement
Location: Oconee County, SC
Crowder was awarded a contract by the SCDOT to replace a US Highway 76 bridge and demolish a 100-year-old abandoned steel truss bridge over the Chattooga River in Oconee County, SC. The Chattooga is a part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System and forms the boundary between SC and GA. It is one of the world’s most famous whitewater rivers and is visited by thousands of rafters each year since being popularized in the 1972 movie Deliverance. Due to the high visibility of this project, adherence to numerous job-specific environmental provisions, such as coordinating the timing of construction activities with several agencies and ensuring the finished product blended into the natural environment, was required. This project was completed using nearly 30,000 man hours with zero recordable or lost time accidents.

Table Rock Intake System
Location: Table Rock Reservoir, SC
Crowder was awarded a contract through Greenville Water Systems to construct a new raw water intake and screen system at one of the southeast’s most beautiful locations in upstate SC: Table Rock Reservoir. Great emphasis was placed on the fastest, most economical and environmentally friendly way to accomplish the task in this popular retreat area. Crowder worked closely with the engineer and the owner to place a 102 feet deep shaft that was intersected by a 480 feet long tunnel. A partnering agreement enabled the project to be finished on time and on budget and resulted in the 2005 National AGC Marvin M. Black Award for partnering as well as the 2005 Carolinas AGC Pinnacle Award for best utility project.
